Modernising BBC children’s brand CBBC for younger audience

Modernising the BBC’s Children’s channels.

A younger audience meant a broadcast system we’d helped put in place for a refreshed BBC needed to be expanded.

Working as part of BBC Creative we collaborated closely with BBC Children’s Marketing in Salford to ensure these changes were right for the viewers of their channels.

A fun new expression

Whereas CBeebies had the much-loved Bugs, CBBC needed a fresh and fun new expression to help bring it to life; meet the Flooms, born from the BBC blocks, the heroes of playful and occasionally outright silly scenarios that represent the broad offering of the channel.

Working collaboratively with 3D animation specialists Ink & Giants and SR Partners we created a set of 15 bonkers idents each very different from each other, creating a diverse and flexible set that can be placed to reflect mood and content - that were a lot of fun to make.

CBBC BRANDING SHOWREEL

Aligned to the broader refreshed BBC Design System

The system needed to align with the new BBC navigation that works across all other channel and platforms. However, rather than lift and shift directly from the other channels, we stretched (quite literally) the motion language already in place, to create ‘Excite’ our more youthful and playful expression of the BBC blocks - better reflecting the energy of the childrens content.

CBBC STUDIO

The ‘Broom cupboard’, but with Flooms

To fully integrate our new ‘Flooms’ into the fabric of the channel, we worked with the Presentation team in Salford to incorporate them into the set of the studio - fondly remembered from our childhoods as ‘The Broom cupboard’.
